Junkanoo

Having removed all Customs Duties from the import of junkanoo materials, increased government funding for junkanoo groups and having established the Junkanoo Expo at the Prince George Dock, the Free National Movement embarked upon a mission to globalise The Bahamas’ premier national cultural expression - Junkanoo.
The Free National Movement believes that the globalisation of Junkanoo and the attendant inclusion of Junkanoo as a part of national economic development, are goals to be attained through the design, development and implementation of a mix of incentives, regulations and structural arrangements to expand, strengthen and deepen linkages between Junkanoo and tourism, and to create viable employment options.
The FNM in its second term will:
  • Make grants of Crown Land to established Junkanoo Groups for the construction of cultural villages.
  • At, or near, the "home base" of major Junkanoo Groups, acquire and make available properties for the development of such villages.
  • Encourage the acquisition of legal status by Junkanoo Groups to enable them to enter into contracts for the acquisition and lease of properties for the construction and development of cultural villages.
  • Institute arrangements for relevant governmental agencies and the Junkanoo Leaders Association, among others, to provide for Junkanoo villages to be developed and promoted as touristic attractions.
  • Establish a loans programme at The Bahamas Development Bank to provide capital for the manufacture of Junkanoo collectibles.
  • Formulate a package of fiscal incentives to include the elimination of customs duty on the import of materials for the manufacture of Junkanoo related souvenirs and costumes.
  • Institutionalise the programme of honouring persons who have made significant contributions to the development of Junkanoo, through the establishment of a permanent Hall of Fame.
  • Establish an independent statutory commission for the development and promotion of Junkanoo.
