The Free National Movement subscribes to the principles of self-determination, sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, dialogue, mutual respect and non-intervention.
We believe in and practise representative democracy and support international cooperation and the peaceful settlement of disputes.The Free National Movement is convinced that The Bahamas’ interests are best served by participation in regional, hemispheric and international organisations and by maintaining close relationships with members of the Caribbean Community, Canada, Latin America, the United States of America and the United Kingdom.
Moreover, the FNM considers that the foreign policy of The Bahamas is inextricably linked to the economic and development goals of the country.
In addition to commitments contained in Manifesto ‘92, your FNM Government in its second term will:Accredit Bahamian Ambassadors to all countries with which diplomatic relations have been established to advance, promote and consolidate the gains achieved with The Bahamas’ revitalised image and by investment promotion visits to South East Asia, Europe, Latin America and Canada. Expand Honorary Consular representation in countries where economic, investment, touristic and other Bahamian interests exist. Acquire suitable accommodation to house the permanent home of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Acquire additional residential properties overseas for the accommodation of Bahamian Foreign Service Officers and Bahamas Diplomatic and Consular Missions. Enact a Foreign Service Act and Regulations governing the Foreign Service. Permit diplomatic and consular missions to issue passports to entitled Bahamian citizens living in their jurisdictions. Amend The Bahamas Nationality Act to permit children born to Bahamian citizens posted overseas in the service of the Government, to be registered as if they had been born in The Bahamas. Amend the Parliamentary Elections Act to permit serving entitled officers to vote in local and national elections. Conclude bi-lateral agreements for the reciprocal employment of spouses of diplomatic and consular officers with countries where The Bahamas has established a diplomatic/consular presence. Continue negotiations on the Delimitation of The Bahamas Maritime Boundaries with neighbouring countries. Computerize the Passport Office to effect greater security and efficient management and delivery of passport services. Issue new passports in machine readable format with improved security features for the enhanced protection of Bahamian pass-ports against fraudulent practices. Designate Family Island Administrators as Passport Officers so as to remove the need for Bahamian citizens resident in the Family Islands to travel to New Providence to obtain new passports. Establish regulations governing the use of the Deed Poll in applying for passports. Conclude Bi-lateral Investment Treaties with selected countries to facilitate protocol and encourage investment. Conclude Bi-lateral Air Services Agreement with selected countries to facilitate greater air traffic to The Bahamas. Conclude Bi-lateral Visa Abolition Agreements with selected countries, to facilitate increased visitor travel to The Bahamas
